What SEL Looks Like in Our Schools

Today, many of our schools utilize evidence-based programs that focus on teaching specific competencies. These programs, which are often integrated into morning meetings, counseling sessions, or even academic subjects, focus on five core areas. These are defined by the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL):

1. Self-Awareness: Identifying one’s own emotions, thoughts, and values.
2. Self-Management: Regulating one’s emotions, thoughts, and behaviors effectively in different situations (e.g., managing stress, self-motivation).
3. Social Awareness: Taking the perspective of and empathizing with others.
4. Relationship Skills: Establishing and maintaining healthy and rewarding relationships (e.g., communicating clearly, resolving conflict).
5. Responsible Decision-Making: Making constructive choices about behavior and social interactions.

These structured programs are essential for teaching children the explicit skills they need to navigate school and peer relationships. They are designed to support all students and provide critical intervention for those who are struggling.

But here is the truth that often goes unsaid: This is often an intervention that starts years too late.

We need to stop asking schools to re-wire behavior that was already cemented in the foundational years. The most powerful SEL curriculum a child will ever receive isn’t in a classroom; it’s in the co-regulation of their home environment.

The Myth of Self-Soothing: Why Child Emotional Regulation Starts with the Parent 🧠

For decades, many parents were encouraged to “let babies self-soothe.” We now know this concept is a biological impossibility for a young child.

A baby’s pre-frontal cortex—the part of the brain responsible for self-control and emotional management—is highly immature. They are born requiring an external regulator to help them manage stress. That external regulator is you.

This scientific concept is called co-regulation. When your child is distressed, they are sending out a nervous system alarm. If you respond from a place of calm, your regulated state literally helps sync their nervous system back to a quiet, safe baseline. You are teaching their brain, through repeated experience, how to calm down.

When we react to a child’s meltdown with our own uncontrolled frustration or anger (i.e., parental dysregulation), we are not teaching regulation. Instead, we are modeling and transmitting escalation. Research consistently links high parental stress and non-adaptive emotion regulation with higher rates of social, behavioral, and mental health issues in youth.

The Prenatal SEL Curriculum: It Starts with the Parent 🧘

If co-regulation is the lesson, then the prerequisite must be the parent’s own self-regulation for child SEL. This is why our focus needs to shift, starting before a child is even born:

💡 Parental Self-Awareness: Identifying the Real Emotion

Before we teach a child to recognize their “big feelings,” we need to teach parents to recognize theirs. This means identifying internal stress cues—the tight jaw, the hot chest, the impulse to yell—before they erupt into a reaction. Crucially, this training must help parents understand that anger is very often a symptom of suppressing another, more vulnerable emotion, such as fear, overwhelm, inadequacy, or grief. If a parent can recognize that their rising anger is actually a mask for deep anxiety about being a “good parent,” they can address the true need instead of reacting punitively.

🎯 The Circle of Control

Prenatal and early-parenting training needs to equip adults with strategies like understanding what they can and cannot control. You can control your response and your effort. However, you cannot control the duration of a tantrum or a baby’s need to cry. Reducing this anxiety is foundational self-care.

⚓ The Calming Anchor

Every parent needs a rapid, go-to self-regulation strategy, like Square Breathing or a quick grounding exercise. This allows a parent to down-regulate their own system in seconds. Thus, they can approach their child with calm instead of conflict.

🚶 When to Walk Away: The Ultimate Self-Regulation Skill

All of these skills culminate in the powerful knowledge of when walking away is the kindest, safest response. If you cannot find your calming anchor, the most responsible action is to temporarily exit the situation. This means placing your child in a safe space (like a crib or playpen) and giving yourself a few moments, or even a minute, to calm down completely—even mommies need time-outs!

Taking a break is firmly identified as responsible, proactive parenting—not neglect or “giving up.” Walking away when you are dysregulated prevents you from passing on that distress or reacting in a way you will regret. By doing this, you model the highest level of self-control for your child.

We must recognize that a parent who is emotionally supported and regulated is the most effective preventative measure against future maladaptive behavior. The early investment in parental self-regulation for child SEL is far more cost-effective than the long-term societal cost of special education, behavioral intervention, and juvenile justice.

📢 An Urgent Call to Action: Advocate for prenatal SEL

We are asking parents to teach a skill they were often never taught. This is not about blame; it is about providing the missing instruction manual. Parental self-regulation is the prerequisite for child SEL.

I am asking you, my fellow SLPs, educators, and concerned parents, to use your voice to advocate for this foundational shift.

The Ask: Contact your State Representatives and State Department of Health officials to urge them to mandate and fund the inclusion of an evidence-based Parental Self-Regulation and Co-Regulation Module as a standard component of all state-funded prenatal and early postnatal care programs.

We are not asking for a new program; we are asking for essential SEL skills to be taught at the right time, to the right person.

Here is a template email you can adapt and send to your elected officials today. Let’s make parental self-regulation a public health imperative.

Subject: Urgent: Fund Foundational Parental Self-Regulation Training for Child Health & Preventative Care

Dear [Representative/Senator/Official Name, or State Department of Health Leadership],

I am writing to you today as [Your Title/Profession: e.g., a School-Based Speech-Language Pathologist and concerned resident of District X]. My work with children in schools across [Your County/Region] consistently reveals that the most effective interventions for social, emotional, and behavioral challenges begin not in the classroom, but with the parent.

The Foundational Challenge: Current efforts in school-based Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) are essential but often start too late. The true foundation for a child’s ability to self-regulate is built through co-regulation—the consistent, calm response of a regulated adult. When parents lack the skills to manage their own stress and emotional triggers, they are inadvertently modeling and transmitting dysregulation to their children, leading to long-term issues.

The Preventative Solution: I urge you to mandate and fund the inclusion of an evidence-based Parental Self-Regulation and Co-Regulation Module as a standard, reimbursable component of all state-funded prenatal and early postnatal care programs.

This funding is not for generic parenting classes. It is an investment in specific, psychoeducational training that teaches parents:

1. Self-Awareness: How to recognize their own internal stress cues (e.g., anxiety, overwhelm) before they escalate into frustration or anger.
2. Calming Anchors: Rapid self-regulation techniques (like deep breathing or grounding) to stabilize their nervous system under pressure.
3. Proactive Parenting: The necessary skill of safely walking away to self-calm when feeling dysregulated, which models the highest level of emotional control for the child.

Cost-Effectiveness: Investing in parental self-regulation is the most powerful preventative measure available. Research consistently shows that early family interventions are dramatically more cost-effective than later remediation efforts (such as special education services, extensive behavioral interventions, or juvenile justice system involvement).

I ask that you prioritize this foundational SEL training. By supporting the mental and emotional health of parents, we are proactively building resilient children and stronger communities.

As an SLP, I see these struggles firsthand. It’s easy to feel like we’re fighting a losing battle against screens, instant gratification, and a perceived societal slide. But what if these feelings, while valid, aren’t actually new? What if the “kids these days” lament is as old as the institution of schooling itself?

This question sent me down a fascinating rabbit hole into the history of education, specifically the turn of the 20th century (roughly 1890-1920). It was an era of immense change: industrialization, urbanization, mass immigration, and the rapid expansion of public schooling. And guess what? Teachers then were airing strikingly similar grievances.

Far from a silent golden age of respectful, diligent students, historical records reveal a different picture. Teachers, often young women, were facing packed classrooms of diverse learners. They battled daily with issues that sound eerily familiar. Our panic about generational language issues is definitely not new.

Generational Decline Then vs. Now: Specific Examples:

Let’s break down some of those “turn of the century” complaints and see how they mirror our present-day struggles. You might be surprised by how little the core issues have changed, proving that today’s “brain rot” in youth is not new:

The Loss of Conversation: From “Cheap Novels” to Cellphones

• Then (c. 1900): Teachers and parents feared students were wasting their minds on the era’s new, pervasive, and easily accessible media: cheap fiction novels and sensational newspapers. They worried these “over-stimulating” print materials were corrupting the youth, pulling their focus from family interaction, academic study, and proper social conversation. The concern was that constant private reading would lead to social isolation.
• Now (c. 2020): We lament that cellphones, social media, and gaming have captured student attention, leading to a decline in face-to-face social skills, difficulty maintaining eye contact, and a loss of focused conversation. The fear is that the screen is isolating students and killing their ability to communicate in depth.
• The Constant: The Loss of the Shared Social Space. Adults worry when youth attention is captured by a new, easily accessible, and unsupervised medium that pulls them away from traditional, adult-sanctioned interaction. The anxiety is identical: a new technology is diverting youth attention and killing conversation and focused thought.

The Scourge of Slang: Language Decay Myth

• Then (c. 1900): Educators constantly fought against the “corruption” of the English language through slang and regional vernacular. This informal street language and emerging youth culture were viewed as a sign of poor intellectual discipline, illiteracy, and a direct threat to proper grammar and vocabulary in the classroom.
• Now (c. 2020): We worry about “brain rot” manifested as students using acronyms, “text-speak,” and minimalist language. We view the over-reliance on AI for writing and shorthand communication as proof of intellectual laziness and a devastating decline in the ability to construct a coherent, sophisticated sentence.
• The Constant: The Linguistic Turf War. The older generation, which defines the “rules” of language, feels threatened by the rapid, creative, and efficient linguistic innovations of the youth. What one generation views as degradation, the younger often sees as efficiency, social belonging, and evolution. The adult disapproval of the change is a constant fixture of the generational divide.

The Battle for Attention: “Unruly” vs. “Distracted”

• Then (c. 1900): Teachers complained vociferously about “unruly” and defiant older boys, especially in mixed-grade rural schools, who would openly challenge authority, flirt, or cause general disruption. Maintaining order often required corporal punishment. Students struggled with the monotonous rote memorization that defined much of the curriculum.
• Now (c. 2020): We lament short attention spans, the constant pull of phones, and students who seem unable to focus on a single task for more than a few minutes. Teachers battle apathy and a perceived lack of respect.
• The Constant: The younger generation naturally resists methods and structures they find unengaging or authoritarian. Their attention is drawn to dynamic, personally relevant stimuli – whether that was pushing boundaries with a teacher or scrolling through TikTok. The expression of disengagement changes, but the root of it often remains the same: a mismatch between intrinsic motivation and imposed task. Analyzing the history of social change shows the fundamental challenge remains the same: engaging the student.

Competing Demands: “Farm Work” vs. “Side Hustles”

• Then (c. 1900): A major headache for teachers was chronic absenteeism due to child labor. Kids were pulled from school for weeks at a time to work on farms during planting/harvesting seasons or to contribute to family income in factories. Their primary focus was often outside the classroom.
• Now (c. 2020): While child labor is (thankfully) not the same issue, teachers still face students who prioritize outside commitments – part-time jobs, demanding sports schedules, extensive extracurriculars, or even gaming – over schoolwork. Their energy and focus are split.
• The Constant: Life outside school has always competed fiercely for students’ time and mental energy. The “teacher’s priority” is often just one of many, and not always the dominant one, in a young person’s life.

The “Degradation” of Language & Skills: From “Rote” to “Rot”

• Then (c. 1900): Progressive educators and frustrated teachers argued vehemently against the prevailing rote memorization model, believing it failed to teach students practical skills, critical thinking, or genuine understanding. They believed students weren’t truly learning what they needed for the modern world.
• Now (c. 2020): This is where the “brain rot” and language degradation arguments truly hit home. We worry about students’ inability to write coherently, their reliance on text-speak, AI for essays, or their struggles with complex reasoning. We hear, “They just can’t think anymore!”
• The Constant: Every generation defines “essential skills” and “proper language” by its own standards. What one era sees as practical, another sees as outdated. What one generation considers a conversational shortcut (e.g., shorthand in the early 1900s, texting abbreviations today), another deems a symptom of intellectual decay. The anxiety around changing communication styles and perceived declining rigor is a generational echo.

The Original Brain Rot: Luxury and Contempt for Authority

“The children now love luxury; they have bad manners, contempt for authority; they show disrespect for elders and love chatter in place of exercise. Children are now tyrants, not the servants of their households. They no longer rise when elders enter the room. They contradict their parents, chatter before company, gobble up dainties at the table, cross their legs, and tyrannize their teachers.”

• Then (c. 4th Century BC): The greatest thinkers of Ancient Greece—Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle—complained extensively about the youth. While this famous viral quote is often misattributed (it was actually penned in 1907), the sentiment of generational language panic is real. Scholars even then complained about the decay of the youth. Critically, Socrates was famously executed, in part, for the crime of “corrupting the youth” by teaching them to question their elders and the established order.
• Now (c. 2020): These are nearly verbatim the complaints you hear today. Students are seen as entitled, unwilling to follow rules, glued to their phones (chatter), and disrespecting traditional structures. The modern equivalent of “corrupting the youth” is the anxiety over teaching critical race theory or complex social justice issues—anything that encourages students to question and critique the beliefs of the previous generation.
• The Constant: The Fear of the Successor. The oldest generation’s deepest fear is that the rising generation will reject the hard-won values, discipline, and institutions they built. In every era, teaching youth to think differently than the previous generation is perceived by some established adults as the ultimate act of “corruption.”

The Underlying Force behind “Brain Rot” Myth: Generational Tension

What these historical parallels underscore is not a continuous, linear decline in human intellect or student quality. Instead, they point to a fundamental, ever-present phenomenon: generational tension.

This tension isn’t about one generation being inherently “better” or “worse” than another. It’s about:

• Different Lived Experiences: Each generation grows up in a unique technological, social, and economic landscape, shaping their worldviews, priorities, and learning styles.
• Mismatched Expectations: Educators, as members of an older generation, naturally teach and assess based on the norms, skills, and values they were taught. Students, operating within their own contemporary reality, respond differently.
• The Nature of Youth: Youth, by its very nature, involves questioning, exploring, and pushing boundaries. This manifests as “unruly” behavior or “distracted” minds, depending on the era’s context.

Adapt instead of panic: Generational Language

So, the next time you feel that pang of despair about supposed “brain rot” or the state of modern education, take a deep breath. Acknowledge the very real challenges we face today – screens are powerful distractors, and mental health is a major concern. But also, take solace in knowing that you’re part of a long, distinguished lineage of educators who have felt similar frustrations.

Our job isn’t to bemoan the “decline,” but to understand the nature of this perennial generational tension. By doing so, we can shift our focus from complaining about what students aren’t to creatively finding ways to meet them where they are. We should adapt our strategies, and leverage their unique generational strengths to foster true learning.

For us as SLPs and educators, this historical context shifts our job description. Instead of fighting text-speak, we can view it as a linguistic window. We can use our expertise to bridge the gap between efficient social language and sophisticated academic language. Our goal remains the same: fostering effective communication across all contexts.

The kids aren’t “brain rotted”; they’re just kids, living in their time, and challenging us to evolve, just as kids have always done.

As an SLP, parents and teachers are often concerned about middle school language development. They often ask me about a student who just doesn’t seem to “get it.” They’ll describe a child who takes everything literally, misses a joke, or seems to lack empathy. Since these kids are fluent speakers who sound like adults, it’s easy to assume these behaviors are a sign of a problem.

This is the middle school paradox. We assume that since their language sounds mature, their brains are fully equipped to handle complex social and communication skills. But what the lack or immaturity of these skills wasn’t a sign of a delay, but evidence of a developing brain? The truth is, while middle schoolers are great at sounding mature, their ability to handle the subtle, unspoken parts of communication is still a work in progress.

The Middle School Brain is Still Developing

It might seem they’ve suddenly grown up, but a middle schooler’s brain is still under construction. The prefrontal cortex, which handles complex thinking and self-control, won’t be fully developed until they are in their mid-twenties. This means many of the skills we adults take for granted are still being built. And honestly, don’t we all struggle with some of these things ourselves, no matter our age?

Understanding Abstract Language

Think about sarcasm, idioms, or metaphors. When a teacher says, “Oh, that’s just what I needed,” after a student drops papers everywhere, most adults get the joke. A middle schooler might not. Understanding this requires going beyond the literal words and reading the person’s tone and context.

This is also where inferencing comes in—it’s the ability to “read between the lines” and figure out what’s not explicitly stated. While a student might be able to define idioms on a school test, using and understanding them in a fast-paced, real-life conversation is much harder. Understanding colorful phrases is a still developing middle school language skill.

Navigating Social Cues

This is more than just empathy—it’s the ability to see things from another person’s point of view. Middle schoolers are so focused on figuring out their own identity that they can seem self-centered. It’s not a lack of caring; it’s a natural part of their social language development in middle school. A person has to understand their own self before they can truly understand others.

Part of this age’s awkwardness is that as they try to figure out their own identity, middle schoolers often “try on” different attitudes, styles, and interests. A student who is quiet one week might be outspoken the next. This isn’t being fake; it’s a natural form of social experimentation as they explore different versions of themselves.

Handling Big Emotions

Middle schoolers understand basic feelings like happy or sad, but they often struggle to name more complex emotions like frustration or anxiety. This can lead to them acting out because they lack the vocabulary to express what they’re truly feeling.

They might feel a physical response—a tight stomach, a pounding heart—without knowing what emotion is causing it. They’re also still developing the self-awareness and self-talk needed to pay attention to these body signals before they become too overwhelming.

More Skills Developing in Middle School Brains

A few other language skills are still growing in middle schoolers, affecting their ability to learn and succeed.

Vocabulary and Word Knowledge

It’s not just about learning new words, but understanding all the different meanings and contexts for a single word. For example, a student might know that “trunk” refers to a suitcase, but they may not yet understand its use in phrases like “elephant trunk” or “tree trunk.”

Complex Language Comprehension

While they are using more sophisticated language, they can still struggle to fully understand long, grammatically intricate sentences in academic texts. The ability to break down and process this kind of intricate language is a skill that develops with exposure and explicit instruction.

Memory and Metacognitive Strategies

Middle schoolers are not only learning new things, but they are also beginning to learn how they learn. They’re developing metacognition—the ability to think about their own thinking. This includes learning and applying strategies for memory, such as using mnemonic devices or chunking information to make it easier to remember.

How You Can Help Middle School Language Development

Your support is the scaffolding they need to build these crucial skills. Here’s how you can help:

• Don’t Just Clarify, Explain. If you use sarcasm, follow up by saying, “I’m just being silly; I actually didn’t need that.” This helps them learn to spot a joke.
• Keep It Simple During High Emotion. When a middle schooler is upset, their thinking brain is offline. Use minimal words and direct instructions, like “Sit down. Breathe.”
• Talk It Through. Help them reflect on social situations. Ask, “Your friend looked sad. Why do you think that is?” This helps them practice perspective-taking and gives them the language to identify complex emotions.

Their challenging behaviors are often a sign of a developing brain, not a lack of effort or intelligence. By viewing them as a work in progress, we can provide the guidance they need to become capable and confident adults.

A Final Thought: The Power of Perspective

Middle school is a time of immense change, and much of the behavior that adults find confusing or frustrating is simply a reflection of a brain that is in an incredible, albeit awkward, state of growth. By reframing our perspective, we can stop seeing challenging behaviors as defiance. We can start viewing them, not only as naturally developing middle school language skills, but also as opportunities for teaching and connection.

Picture this: You’ve been teaching idioms non-stop, patting yourself on the back because your students just learned ‘Spill the beans.’ Moments later, they’re on TikTok asking ‘It’s giving what?’ or saying ‘No cap.’ Are we truly equipping them for the language they live in?

While I love the idioms from yesteryear, such as all the lovely sayings from Aesop’s fables, you don’t hear them much in everyday life. The majority of students haven’t even been exposed to Aesop’s fables beyond a story or two.

Try listening in at a restaurant some time, especially to a group of younger people, or reading song lyrics from a popular new song. I imagine the older you are, the less you’ll recognize their figurative language. If they don’t hear it in their lives, why are we pushing it? Have you ever asked them “Have you heard this before?” I have, and I usually get a baffled shake of the head.

Language is a living, breathing thing. It’s constantly evolving, shedding old phrases and creating new ones. We sometimes have to let go of the old and accept the new. That means it’s time to ask a crucial question: Why are we even bothering with teaching idioms in the first place?

The True “Why”: Understanding Non-Literal Language, Not Memorizing a Secret Code

When we teach idioms to students, our primary goal shouldn’t be to have them memorize a fixed list of phrases as if they were secret codes for an exclusive club. (Honestly, whose club would they be codes to? Grandma’s bridge club?) If our aim is simply rote memorization, we’re missing the point entirely.

The real “why” behind idiom instruction is far more profound: to foster a robust understanding of non-literal language.

Benefits of Understanding Non-Literal Language

• Inferencing and Abstract Thinking: Understanding idioms requires moving beyond the concrete and literal. It builds critical thinking skills necessary for comprehending metaphors, sarcasm, humor, and complex social cues.
• Social Communication: So much of human interaction relies on implied meanings and figurative speech. A student who struggles with non-literal language might miss jokes, misinterpret intentions, or feel perpetually “out of the loop.”
• Reading Comprehension: Texts, even those for younger readers, are rife with figurative language. A strong grasp of non-literal concepts directly impacts reading comprehension and overall academic success.
• Language Flexibility: Understanding that words can have multiple layers of meaning makes students more agile and adaptable language users.

If our students are simply memorizing that ‘raining cats and dogs’ means heavy rain but don’t grasp the underlying concept that words can take on completely new meanings when combined, or how to figure them out, we’re not truly serving them. We’re giving them a fish for today rather than teaching them how to fish for a lifetime of language.

Why ‘Grandma’s Idioms’ Aren’t Cutting It Anymore

The challenge with focusing exclusively on teaching traditional idioms is their diminishing relevance. While culturally significant, phrases like ‘kick the bucket’ or ‘let the cat out of the bag’ are rarely encountered in the daily conversations, social media feeds, or digital interactions of today’s youth.

When we present students with idioms that feel foreign and disconnected from their world, we risk:

• Demotivation: Learning feels like an arbitrary chore rather than a relevant skill.
• Lack of Context: Without real-world exposure, the idioms lack natural context, making them harder to internalize and generalize.
• Inefficiency: Precious therapy and classroom time are spent on vocabulary that may never be actively used or encountered.

Of course, the classics still have their place. Learning to decode figurative language is a timeless skill. Consider exploring a time when language and culture were in a period of change, much like today.

The Solution to Understanding Figurative Language

Instead of teaching a list of static idioms, let’s empower our students, working alongside teachers and parents, to become idiom detectives! The goal is to identify, interpret, and understand the non-literal language they encounter every single day.

I propose creating a Living Idiom Dictionary—a dynamic, collaborative resource that evolves with the language our students actually use and hear. My Living Dictionary for Slang and Idioms is a free product that can help you get started.

How it Works:

• Spot It! Encourage students to listen for phrases they don’t understand, especially in casual conversations, TV shows, movies, social media, song lyrics, and video games.
• Capture It! When an unfamiliar phrase pops up, jot it down. This can be a physical notebook, a shared digital document, a whiteboard in the classroom, or a note on the fridge at home.

• Define It (Collaboratively)! This is the crucial step. Instead of just looking it up, discuss:What do the individual words mean literally?
  • What do you think it means in this context?
  • Where did you hear it? Who uses it?
  • Work together (SLP/teacher/parent with student, or even peers) to figure out the non-literal meaning. Sometimes, a quick online search might be necessary to confirm.

Teaching How to Decode Figurative Language

You can use my free Figurative Language Decoding Visual Aid to help students with the process of untangling the meaning of figurative language. This simple, two-page guide includes a figurative language decision tree and a 3-step decoding guide, turning students into language detectives.

Revisit and Revise: Language is constantly changing. This dictionary isn’t static. Encourage students to add new entries, refine definitions, and even note when certain phrases fall out of use.

Now, ye might be wonderin’, “Why in the seven seas should we bother teachin’ alternatives to ‘I don’t know’?”

I’ll tell ye why! Ye see, when a wee lad or lass be faced with a question they don’t have the answer to, their knee-jerk reaction be to blurt out them dreaded words. But fear not, me hearties. There be a treasure trove of alternatives just waitin’ to be discovered!

Picture this: ye be standin’ at the helm of yer classroom ship, askin’ a question to yer crew of eager learners. Instead of hearin’ the usual chorus of “I don’t know,” ye be greeted with a myriad of creative responses. From “Could you show me where to find it?” to “I’m not sure how to explain it,” these alternatives be like little nuggets of gold. They are buried beneath the surface of uncertainty.

But why, ye ask, should we be teachin’ these alternatives?

Well, me fellow speech pathologists and teachers, let me tell ye. Our students probably don’t think about how to ask for help when answering a teacher’s question.  And they may have difficulty finding the words on their own.

By encouragin’ our students to explore different ways of expressin’ their lack of knowledge, we be empowerin’ them to take control of their learnin’ journey. No longer will they feel like they be stranded on a desert island of confusion!  You, their fearless navigator, will be able to give them better guidance. You will aid them on their treasure hunt for knowledge.

Now, ye may be thinkin’, “But how do we go about teachin’ these alternatives?”

Understanding Slow Processing Speed

First things first, what exactly is slow processing speed? Essentially, it’s like having a little lag time in processing information. Whether it’s following instructions, completing tasks, or participating in discussions, students with slow processing speed may need a bit more time to absorb and respond to what’s happening around them.

Signs of Slow Processing Speed

Keep an eye out for signs like taking longer to complete assignments, needing extra time to process verbal instructions, or struggling to keep up with fast-paced classroom activities. Students with slow processing speed may frequently answer classroom discussion questions with “I don’t know.” Or they may look like they are ignoring the question. Recognizing these signs early on can help us tailor our support strategies to meet each student’s unique needs.

Coping Strategies for Speech Pathologists and Teachers

Visual Aids for the Win

Incorporate visual aids like charts, diagrams, and color-coded organizers to supplement verbal information. These tools provide a visual roadmap that can help students with slow processing speed better understand and remember information.

Break It Down, Step by Step

When introducing new tasks or assignments, break them down into smaller, more manageable steps. This helps prevent overwhelm and gives students a clear roadmap to follow, one step at a time.

Repeat, Repeat, Repeat

Repetition is key! Repeat important information multiple times using different modalities (verbal, visual, tactile) to reinforce learning and boost comprehension.

Time Isn’t Always of the Essence

Offer extended time for completing assignments and assessments to accommodate the slower processing speed of some students. Remember, it’s not about how fast they finish—it’s about understanding and mastery.

Ace Active Listening

Teach active listening strategies like summarizing information, asking clarifying questions, and taking notes during discussions. These techniques help students stay engaged and enhance their comprehension skills.

Speak Slowly and in Shorter Chunks

Like listening to a foreign language, students with processing difficulties need time to process a piece of information before they are given the next piece. Practice slowing your speech down and pausing frequently when introducing material. Everyone in the class will benefit.

Allow Think Time

• Give students a heads-up about discussion topics in advance, allowing them extra time to process and formulate their thoughts. 
• Give students ample think time after asking a question to allow those with slower processing speed to gather their thoughts and formulate their responses. 

• Incorporate a few seconds of think time before a question is answered for every student. 
• Teach students they can signal that they are still thinking with an index finger held up or another signal to ask for more time. 
• Give students more productive alternatives for saying “I don’t know.”  Treasure Clues for Learning is a resource I’ve made to assist. 

Encourage Turn-Taking

Establish clear rules for turn-taking during small group discussions to ensure that all students have an opportunity to contribute at their own pace.

Provide Scaffolded Support

Offer scaffolded support during discussions by breaking down questions into smaller parts, showing them where to find the answer, or providing sentence starters to help students structure their responses. Cuing and prompting can help these students make connections faster.

By implementing these coping strategies with empathy, patience, and flexibility, we can empower students with slow processing speed to reach their full potential and succeed academically and beyond. I put this on my board one school day. See, for the last 5 or so years, I’d had a poster-size white erase board in the hallway of my school. It was beside the entrance to the cafeteria. Therefore, every student would have a chance to see it during the day. I then sit in my room and listen to the conversations in the hallway. The children, I think, would have voted this joke as the best one that year.

But my board had a purpose beyond the amusement of everyone in the school. Not only did it lighten the mood and start the day with fun, every child in that school knew who I was. I wasn’t just an unknown adult that pulled kids out of classes. I raised the bar for vocabulary for the entire school. It gave everyone a common thing to talk about, and (let’s be honest) identified students that likely would need my services at one time or another.

The Therapeutic Value of Humor

Most of us feel better after a good laugh, and it’s not all in your head. Laughter increases those feel good chemicals in your brain. It boosts the immune system and relieves stress.  It gives us a social connection and helps shift perspectives into a lighter side of life. It even improves circulation and gives your tummy a bit of a workout. I have no doubt it created a happier, more connected school environment than there otherwise would have been.

Academic Benefits of Humor

Most of us have thought about how jokes can address multiple speech and language skills. To understand humor, students have to understand nuances, multiple meanings, and wordplay. Often jokes rely on figurative language. They involve cognitive processes like inference, prediction, and abstract thinking. 

Jokes help students practice social skills such as turn-taking, perspective taking, and understanding social cues. They build rapport. When telling a joke, students are practicing fluency skills like pacing and intonation, as well as articulation skills. Students are encouraged to commit the joke to memory so they can retell it. This helps them work on memory skills as well.

Building Rapport and Engagement:

Humor builds a bridge between students and teachers. It makes school a more light-hearted place.  Having a joke to share gives shy or anxious children a low-pressure way to engage in conversation.  The kids would tell the jokes to each other, and talk about whether it was funny or not. They discussed what made it a joke. I often heard teachers using the jokes as a teaching opportunity in the hallways.

As I talked with others about why I had the joke board, it raised awareness with teachers. They realized that what I did with students inside my little room wasn’t just working on /r/ and /s/. When I called it my “school-wide intervention,” it highlighted how essential speech and language skills are for daily communication.  Students in the school knew who I was, and saw me as a positive person in the school.  I had teachers and students alike bringing me jokes.

Addressing Challenges and Limitations:

So, what is the problem with using humor? I did have to be careful that the jokes were school appropriate, of course. No jokes about “two guys walk into a bar.” They had to be age-appropriate as well, so I skipped over a lot of jokes. Some of these the students at my school might not have the context or vocabulary for. And some kids just didn’t get the jokes (and they were usually on my list for MTSS interventions).

Finding enough jokes for the entire year was a bit difficult the first year. I then had to keep track of them somehow. Now I have It’s So Punny, a document that is over 50 pages long, full of jokes appropriate for school, which you can find in my TPT store.

The board itself was an issue at some points through every school year.  There is always that one student who finds it entertaining to erase it with their fingers. I would switch from dry erase to wet erase to whiteboard crayons throughout the year. Having a transparent cover might have helped that problem. I had to get permission to hang the whiteboard on the wall (I used removable adhesive strips).

Two Thumbs Up

In conclusion, though, I would highly recommend a joke board in your school or classroom. There are so many reasons to incorporate humor in the school day. The conversations I heard outside of my room were often the best part of the day. Hearing the students comment as they walked by was truly enjoyable.

Every year around Teacher Appreciation Week, social media overflows with gratitude for educators. But as a school-based SLP for over 24 years, I’ve witnessed firsthand the complexities that lie beneath the surface. Comments like “If you hate your job so much, why don’t you just quit?” often miss the mark entirely.

This post is for those who might not understand the full picture. Having listened to and experienced the daily struggles of countless teachers, I want to delve deeper. We’ll explore the reasons why the question “Why don’t you just quit?” overlooks the harsh realities that bind educators to a system that often fails to support them adequately. Many dedicated teachers feel trapped in a system that fails to support them. We’ll delve into the reasons why leaving the profession can feel like an impossible choice, ultimately highlighting the human cost this has on education.

The Golden Handcuffs of Pensions: Stuck for Life?

Many teachers enter the profession with idealistic visions, fueled by a desire to ignite a passion for learning in young minds. But financial realities can quickly cast a long shadow. Unlike traditional 401(k) plans, teacher retirement benefits often come in the form of pensions. These pensions vest after a set number of years, typically a decade or more, promising eventual financial security – but only if you can stay the course for the long haul.  This section explores the financial constraints that trap teachers in the system, such as vested pensions.

Have you ever dreamt of leaving a job you loved, but felt financially chained to it?

Leaving a school system before retirement age, even if vested, means forfeiting future contributions. This can significantly reduce your total retirement payout. Imagine dedicating ten years of your life to a demanding profession, only to walk away with a fraction of the financial security you envisioned. The complexity doesn’t stop there. Switching school districts between states can further complicate retirement plans, potentially leading to a loss of accumulated value or benefits. This financial penalty acts as a powerful disincentive for teachers considering a change, even when frustration with the system sets in.

For those who reach the vesting mark, there’s a sense of being stuck in the middle. Vesting offers some security, but it’s not yet retirement age. Transitioning to a new career at this point can feel daunting. The skills honed in the classroom may not translate directly to other industries, creating a sense of being trapped. Furthermore, the unique structure of teacher pensions often means a lack of contributions to Social Security, adding another layer of financial hurdles for those considering leaving the system.

Degrees That Don’t Translate: Stuck Between Passion and Paycheck?

Teaching credentials might feel like golden tickets to a specific school, but not necessarily to a broader career landscape. Education degrees are packed with valuable skills in pedagogy, curriculum development, and child development. However, these specialized skills may not translate directly to other industries, especially for teachers burdened by student loan debt.

The weight of student loan debt pushes a significant number of teachers to take on extra work. More than a third, or 36.7%, of teachers with student loans reported working multiple jobs concurrently. This trend becomes more pronounced for teachers facing larger monthly loan payments.¹

Imagine a dedicated teacher who has poured years into crafting engaging lesson plans and fostering positive learning environments. Frustration or burnout might be nudging them towards a career change, but the path forward is shrouded in uncertainty. Finding a new career path that utilizes their existing skillset while also managing student loan debt can feel like searching for a unicorn. Training programs for entirely new careers can be expensive and time-consuming, further amplifying the financial burden of leaving the education system.

What if you were prevented from realizing your dream job, but your transferable skills might not seem like a good fit elsewhere?

Stuck in the Sandbox: Why Does Climbing the Ladder Mean Leaving the Classroom?

The traditional path for promotion in education pushes teachers out of the classroom and into administrative roles. While some enjoy leadership, many simply want to teach. This lack of advancement within the classroom itself, coupled with low salaries and mandatory pensions, creates a trap. This section explores the lack of advancement opportunities for teachers within the classroom, a key factor in teacher retention. The only path to higher pay seems to be ditching students for admin duties. This feels eerily similar to a pyramid scheme, rewarding recruiting new teachers (members) over excellence in the classroom. Shouldn’t exceptional teaching be valued as highly as administrative roles?

Beyond the Grades: The Hidden Cost of Teacher Burnout

Imagine a teacher who pours their heart into their students, but faces crushing workloads and constant pressure.  Can you imagine feeling burnt out despite loving your students?  This relentless stress can lead to burnout, a state of exhaustion that bleeds into every aspect of their life. This section explores the negative impact of teacher burnout on both teachers and students.

The consequences aren’t limited to tired teachers. Burnout manifests as apathy, reduced engagement in the classroom, and a struggle to maintain patience. This can create a ripple effect, impacting student learning, classroom stability, and even the relationships between teachers and students. Disengaged students and strained relationships can then deepen the teacher’s burnout, creating a vicious cycle. 

Burnout leaves teachers with little energy or motivation to pursue solutions, either within education or for their well-being. This systemic issue has far-reaching consequences. Let’s discuss ways to support teachers and prevent burnout, fostering a system where passionate educators can thrive!

The Enduring Allure of Teaching: A Light That Shines Through

Despite the challenges, many educators choose to stay because the core of teaching ignites an unparalleled passion within them. It’s the moment a student grasps a complex concept for the first time, their eyes lighting up with understanding. It’s the quiet conversations that spark curiosity and a love for learning. Witnessing these “aha!” moments and nurturing young minds fuels a teacher’s spirit and rekindles the joy they found in education in the first place.

These dedicated educators aren’t simply dispensers of knowledge; they are guides, mentors, and sometimes even cheerleaders. They create safe spaces where students can explore, experiment, and discover their own unique talents. The chance to witness a student blossom, gain confidence, and develop a lifelong love of learning is a powerful motivator that keeps many teachers coming back for more, year after year.

Reimagine Retirement: Unlocking Mobility and Security

Teacher pensions are often cited as a reason educators stay put, even in the face of dissatisfaction. However, the current system can feel like a golden cage. Traditional pensions often lack portability, meaning the value accumulated is tied to a specific school district. This discourages teachers from seeking better opportunities elsewhere. They fear losing their hard-earned retirement savings. Solutions like portable pension plans or hybrid models would allow teachers to take their retirement security with them. This fosters greater mobility and career flexibility. It not only benefits teachers but also allows school districts to attract and retain top talent from a wider pool.

Multifaceted Degrees: Building Bridges Beyond the Classroom

Many teacher education programs focus primarily on pedagogy, leaving graduates inadequately prepared for a career change outside the classroom. This lack of transferable skills can feel like a dead end, trapping passionate educators in a system that no longer serves them. Universities and colleges can address this by offering multifaceted degrees. These programs would equip future educators with valuable skills beyond lesson planning and classroom management. Incorporating courses in project management, data analysis, communication, and educational technology would make teacher graduates valuable assets not only in the classroom but also in other industries. This flexibility provides teachers with a safety net. It empowers them to pursue opportunities outside education, if needed, while also enriching their skillset and making them potentially more effective educators.

Empowering Teachers: Reigniting Passion Through Autonomy

Micromanagement, standardized testing, and inflexible curriculums can stifle a teacher’s creativity and autonomy. This leads to a feeling of powerlessness and a disconnect from the core reason they entered the profession – to inspire and nurture young minds. Teacher autonomy is essential in fostering a positive learning environment.¹ 

Teacher retention thrives in environments that nurture their ability to achieve success with students. This means a redesign of schools to prioritize strong relationships between educators, students, and families. Additionally, schools need to personalize education, tailoring learning experiences to individual student needs and learning styles. By fostering these elements, schools can create environments where both teachers and students flourish.²

Imagine a teacher who is passionate about environmental science being given the freedom to create a project-based learning experience. This experience could incorporate field trips, guest speakers, and hands-on activities. Similarly, an English teacher, upon discovering the majority of his class loves Star Wars, could create a curriculum around this shared passion. This autonomy allows teachers to innovate and engage students on a deeper level. Ultimately, they find joy in the teaching process. Furthermore, it fosters a sense of professionalism and trust. This leads to a more fulfilling work experience.

Alternative Advancement Paths: Leading from Within

The traditional career path in education often leads from teacher to administrator. However, this path may not appeal to every passionate educator. Have you ever watched a student struggling to fit into a round-peg classroom? The traditional education system often pushes a “one-size-fits-all” approach, relying on labels like “Autism,” “ADHD,” or “learning disabled” to categorize students. But what if we tossed those labels aside and focused instead on the vast and unique learning styles that each student possesses? Imagine the potential we could unlock!

The Limitations of Labels

Labels can be restrictive. They fail to capture the individual strengths and challenges of each student. A student might excel in creative writing but struggle with math, regardless of any learning disability classifications. These labels, including “Autism” or “Language Disorder,” can become self-fulfilling prophecies, hindering student confidence and growth. The focus should be on the student as a person, not a diagnosis.

Embracing the Spectrum of Learning Styles

Instead of rigid categories, let’s embrace the spectrum of learning styles that exists within ALL students. Some students are visual learners, thriving on colorful charts, diagrams, and graphic organizers. Auditory learners flourish with captivating lectures, podcasts, and group discussions. Kinesthetic learners excel with hands-on activities, experiments, and role-playing exercises. Most students won’t fall neatly into one category; they might possess a blend of these styles with varying strengths in each area.

Research and the Learning Styles Connection

The concept of learning styles and its connection to student achievement has been explored in educational research. A study by Dunn and Dunn (1993) found a positive correlation between students’ preferred learning styles and their academic performance. Students who received instruction tailored to their learning styles showed better results compared to those who did not. ¹

While learning styles can offer insights into student preferences, cognitive scientist Daniel Willingham argues that they shouldn’t be the sole focus². The article argues that scientific evidence does not support learning styles as they are currently utilized. People do differ in their abilities and interests, but these are not the same as learning styles.

Effective teaching methods that cater to individual students are crucial. The true power lies in individualized learning, which moves beyond labels and focuses on understanding each student’s unique strengths and weaknesses. This approach unlocks student potential by creating a dynamic learning environment that caters to their individual needs and preferences.

For example, combining a lecture with visuals like diagrams or animations can solidify understanding for both auditory and visual learners, while incorporating elements of social interaction can benefit all students.³

By incorporating a variety of instructional methods, we can engage all learners and cater to their preferred styles. This might involve:

• Visual Aids: Charts, diagrams, infographics, and videos can enhance understanding for visual learners.
• Auditory Activities: Lectures, discussions, podcasts, and audiobooks can benefit auditory learners.
• Kinesthetic Learning: Hands-on activities, simulations, experiments, and role-playing can solidify concepts for kinesthetic learners.
• Social Interaction: Incorporating elements of social interaction and clear communication can benefit all students, but especially those who might experience social anxieties or need extra social practice. This could involve providing clear expectations with visual supports, offering opportunities for peer collaboration, and celebrating successes in social settings.

It’s important to remember however, that almost all students benefit from a variety of modalities!

Meeting Individual Needs, Not Labels

Forget the labels! Instead of categorizing students based on diagnoses, let’s focus on understanding their individual strengths, challenges, and preferred learning styles. Every student is unique, and a one-size-fits-all approach simply doesn’t work. By truly meeting each child where they are, we can create a more inclusive and effective learning environment.

The Power of Differentiation

Differentiation is a powerful teaching strategy that tailors instruction to meet individual needs, regardless of labels. This might involve providing differentiated materials (e.g., graphic organizers for visual learners, audiobooks for auditory learners), offering tiered assignments with varying levels of complexity, or creating flexible learning environments that allow students for independent or collaborative work based on their preferences.

The beauty lies in the fact that differentiation isn’t just for students who excel or struggle. The article by Tomlinson and McTighe also suggests that even students who fall into the category of “average” learners can thrive in an environment that caters to their individual strengths and weaknesses. 

Imagine the potential that could be unlocked if every student, regardless of labels, received the kind of individualized instruction typically reserved for those on the perceived extremes of the learning spectrum!⁴

benefit ALL learners. Imagine a classroom where everyone thrives with:

Flexible Timelines

Deadlines can be stressful. Offering flexible timelines allows for deeper understanding and reduces anxiety for all students, including those who might not be considered academically challenged but could benefit from a less rigid pace.

Varied Instructional Modes

A diverse toolbox of teaching methods keeps everyone engaged and caters to different learning styles. “Average” students, who might possess a blend of learning styles, can particularly benefit from this variety.

Extra Support

Providing individualized support, whether it’s one-on-one time, small group instruction, or access to additional resources, empowers students and fosters confidence. This is not just for students who are struggling; even those perceived as “average” learners can benefit from additional support to push their understanding to the next level.

Positive Learning Environment

A supportive and encouraging classroom environment is crucial for all students. This means fostering a climate of respect, celebrating individual strengths, and offering opportunities for students to learn from each other.

Forget the labels and meet students where they are. By focusing on their individual strengths and learning styles, we can create a truly inclusive learning environment. Embrace the spectrum of learning styles and unlock the true potential within every single student.

Here are some ways to put these ideas into action!

Informal Assessments

Conduct informal assessments throughout the year to gauge student preferences. This could involve simple observations, surveys, or student self-evaluations on how they learn best.

Flexible Learning Stations

Create learning stations around the classroom that cater to different learning styles. One station could have manipulatives and hands-on activities for kinesthetic learners, another might have informational videos and audiobooks for auditory learners, and a third could be filled with charts and graphic organizers for visual learners. Students can rotate through these stations independently or in small groups.

Choice Boards

Offer students choice in how they demonstrate their understanding. This could involve options for creating presentations, writing essays, building models, or recording podcasts.

Technology Integration

Technology can be a powerful tool for differentiation. There are many online resources, apps, and digital tools that cater to different learning styles and can provide specific support for students who might benefit from additional resources.

Add Music

Ever had an ear worm that just won’t go away? It rarely happens with conversational phrases, but that jingle for the AC company is stuck fast. Teaching difficult subjects as a jingle makes the lesson more enjoyable and adds another modality for learning.

Remember, creating a truly inclusive learning environment is an ongoing process. By being flexible, creative, and responsive to student needs, we can unlock the potential within each and every learner.

Rethinking School Infrastructure for Individualized Learning

The beautiful vision of a learning environment that caters to individual needs might necessitate some changes in how our schools operate. Let’s explore some ways we can adapt our educational infrastructure:

Moving Beyond the Cookie-Cutter Curriculum

Rigid, one-size-fits-all curriculums limit the potential for differentiation. We need to embrace flexible learning models that allow teachers to tailor instruction to the specific needs and interests of their students. Remember, not all students will go on to college, and that’s okay!

Rethinking Special Education

The current system of special education often relies on categories and labels to determine eligibility for support. However, these labels can sometimes restrict access to services for students who might benefit from them.

Instead, we can build a system that recognizes and celebrates individual differences in learning styles and abilities. This approach would provide targeted support for all learners, regardless of labels, ensuring they receive the resources they need to thrive.

Smaller Class Sizes

Smaller classrooms can provide teachers with the space and flexibility to offer more individualized support and create differentiated learning experiences.

Matching Learning Styles

While not always feasible, exploring innovative approaches like matching teachers and students based on compatible teaching and learning styles could create a more dynamic and engaging learning environment.

Flexible Learning Spaces

The traditional classroom layout might not be ideal for diverse learning styles. Redesigning classrooms to incorporate flexible learning spaces with areas for quiet reflection, group collaboration, hands-on activities, and visual displays can cater to a wider range of needs.

Professional Development for Differentiation

Teachers play a pivotal role in implementing individualized learning strategies. Investing in professional development opportunities to enhance differentiation skills will empower teachers to effectively cater to the unique needs of each student.

Use of technology

By strategically integrating technology like adaptive learning programs and online resources, teachers can personalize instruction for each student while reducing their workload and allowing them to focus on more individualized support.

By making these adjustments, we can create school environments that are truly supportive of individualized learning and empower all students to reach their full potential.

Individualized learning extends beyond traditional academic subjects

Speech-language pathologists (SLPs) play a crucial role in identifying and addressing communication challenges. By collaborating with teachers and incorporating differentiated strategies, SLPs can help students of all abilities reach their full potential in both communication and academic domains.
