<p><span style="font-family: Mali;">I put this on my board one school day. See, for the last 5 or so years, I&#8217;d had a poster-size white erase board in the hallway of my school. It was beside the entrance to the cafeteria. Therefore, every student would have a chance to see it during the day. I then sit in my room and listen to the conversations in the hallway. The children, I think, would have voted this joke as the best one that year.</span></p>



<p><span style="font-family: Mali;">But my board had a purpose beyond the amusement of everyone in the school. Not only did it lighten the mood and start the day with fun, every child in that school knew who I was. I wasn&#8217;t just an unknown adult that pulled kids out of classes. I raised the bar for vocabulary for the entire school. It gave everyone a common thing to talk about, and (let&#8217;s be honest) identified students that likely would need my services at one time or another.</span></p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-therapeutic-value-of-humor"><span style="font-family: Mali;">The Therapeutic Value of Humor</span></h3>

<p><span style="font-family: Mali;">Most of us feel better after a good laugh, and it&#8217;s not all in your head. Laughter increases those feel good chemicals in your brain. It boosts the immune system and relieves stress.&nbsp; It gives us a social connection and helps shift perspectives into a lighter side of life. It even improves circulation and gives your tummy a bit of a workout. I have no doubt it created a happier, more connected school environment than there otherwise would have been.</span></p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-academic-benefits-of-humor"><span style="font-family: Mali;">Academic Benefits of Humor</span></h3>



<p><span style="font-family: Mali;">Most of us have thought about how jokes can address multiple speech and language skills. To understand humor, students have to understand nuances, multiple meanings, and wordplay. Often jokes rely on figurative language. They involve cognitive processes like inference, prediction, and abstract thinking.&nbsp;</span></p>



<p><span style="font-family: Mali;">Jokes help students practice social skills such as turn-taking, perspective taking, and understanding social cues. They build rapport. When telling a joke, students are practicing fluency skills like pacing and intonation, as well as articulation skills. Students are encouraged to commit the joke to memory so they can retell it. This helps them work on memory skills as well.</span></p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-building-rapport-and-engagement"><span style="font-family: Mali;">Building Rapport and Engagement:</span></h2>

<p><span style="font-family: Mali;">Humor builds a bridge between students and teachers. It makes school a more light-hearted place.&nbsp; Having a joke to share gives shy or anxious children a low-pressure way to engage in conversation.&nbsp; The kids would tell the jokes to each other, and talk about whether it was funny or not. They discussed what made it a joke. I often</span> <span style="font-family: Mali;">heard teachers using the jokes as a teaching opportunity in the hallways.</span></p>



<p><span style="font-family: Mali;">As I talked with others about why I had the joke board, it raised awareness with teachers. They realized that what I did with students inside my little room wasn&#8217;t just working on /r/ and /s/. When I called it my &#8220;school-wide intervention,&#8221; it highlighted how essential speech and language skills are for daily communication.&nbsp; Students in the school knew who I was, and saw me as a positive person in the school.&nbsp; I had teachers and students alike bringing me jokes.</span></p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-addressing-challenges-and-limitations"><span style="font-family: Mali;">Addressing Challenges and Limitations:</span></h2>



<p><span style="font-family: Mali;">So, what is the problem with using humor? I did have to be careful that the jokes were school appropriate, of course. No jokes about &#8220;two guys walk into a bar.&#8221; They had to be age-appropriate as well, so I skipped over a lot of jokes. Some of these the students at my school might not have the context or vocabulary for. And some kids just didn&#8217;t get the jokes (and they were usually on my list for MTSS interventions).</span></p>

<p><span style="font-family: Mali;">Finding enough jokes for the entire year was a bit difficult the first year. I then had to keep track of them somehow. Now I have <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Its-So-Punny-11206874" target="_blank" rel="noopener">It&#8217;s So Punny</a>, a document that is over 50 pages long, full of jokes appropriate for school, which you can find in my TPT store.</span></p>



<p><span style="font-family: Mali;">The board itself was an issue at some points through every school year.&nbsp; There is always that one student who finds it entertaining to erase it with their fingers. I would switch from dry erase to wet erase to whiteboard crayons throughout the year. Having a transparent cover might have helped that problem. I had to get permission to hang the whiteboard on the wall (I used removable adhesive strips).</span></p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-two-thumbs-up">Two Thumbs Up</h3>



<p><span style="font-family: Mali;">In conclusion, though, I would highly recommend a joke board in your school or classroom. There are so many reasons to incorporate humor in the school day. The conversations I heard outside of my room were often the best part of the day. Hearing the students comment as they walked by was truly enjoyable.&nbsp;</span></p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-ety-what">Ety- what?</h2>



<p><strong>Etymology </strong>– the study of word origins – is like uncovering hidden treasure. It&#8217;s often seen as a dusty academic pursuit, but trust me, it&#8217;s a goldmine for teachers and SLPs.  In this post we&#8217;ll dig deep into why etymology matters.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-family-tree-of-a-word">The Family Tree of a Word</h3>

<p>Imagine this: &#8216;School&#8217; originally meant &#8216;leisure time&#8217; – more like a coffee shop or pub hang-out than a classroom!</p>



<p>It originated as the Greek word &#8220;σχολή&#8221; (scholē), and was used to describe free time to come together for intellectual pursuits, discussions, and contemplation. When the Romans adopted the word as Latin &#8220;schola&#8221;, it eventually began to refer more to the place of lectures and learning, rather than the time itself.</p>



<p>As it entered Old English, it retained the meaning, but spelling was inconsistent. The spelling was modernized but kept the &#8220;sch&#8221; to refer back to the original word. &#8220;Scholastic&#8221; and &#8220;scholar&#8221; both come from the Latin &#8220;schola&#8221;.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-wired-for-stories">Wired for Stories</h3>



<p>You will probably easily remember this story, won&#8217;t you? That&#8217;s because our brains are <b>wired to remember stories</b>.&nbsp; That&#8217;s one of the reasons why etymology is so important when teaching spelling, morphology, and vocabulary.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-not-just-dictionary-work">Not Just Dictionary Work</h3>



<p>While I remember assignments to write the prefix/root/suffix, origin language, and meaning as I defined new vocabulary words, it felt like a&nbsp;<strong>dry and tedious</strong>&nbsp;exercise. It often lacked meaning and felt disconnected from the actual word itself.&nbsp;</p>



<p>However, when etymology is presented as a way to&nbsp;<strong>tell the story of a word</strong>&nbsp;– its journey through time and across languages – it becomes much more engaging. This approach not only makes learning more interesting but also helps students create deeper connections between words, understand the nuances of their meanings, and even infer the meanings of unfamiliar words.</p>



<h3 class="wp-block-heading">Why teach etymology?</h3>



<h4 class="wp-block-heading">Spelling Superpower:</h4>



<p>Ever wonder why spelling bee champions ask for the origin of a word?&nbsp; Understanding etymology can be a real game-changer for spellers.&nbsp; Word origins give students ways to understand and remember the spelling of words.</p>



<h5 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-unravelling-irregularities">Unravelling Irregularities</h5>

<p>Many of those pesky spelling rules have historical roots.&nbsp; Look at these great examples!</p>



<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>Knight&nbsp;</strong>&#8211; comes from Old English cneht. The /k/ sound was originally pronounced but had faded by 1760.</li>



<li><strong>Island</strong>&nbsp;&#8211; comes from Old English &#8220;igland&#8221; /ˈiːjˌlɑnd/ but spelling was modified in 16th century due to a mistaken relationship with the word &#8220;isle&#8221;</li>



<li><strong>Doubt&nbsp;</strong>&#8211; from Latin &#8220;dubitare,&#8221; but came to English from Old French &#8220;douter&#8221;. The &#8216;b&#8217; was added back in 14-16 c. to refer back to the Latin origin.</li>
</ul>



<h5 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-unlocking-word-structure">Unlocking Word Structure</h5>



<p>By breaking down words into their roots, prefixes, and suffixes, students gain a deeper understanding of their structure. This knowledge can help them predict spellings more accurately and recognize patterns. For instance, knowing the root &#8220;psych-&#8221; helps students with words like psychology, psychopath, psychic, and psychotic.</p>



<h5 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-rules-of-origin">Rules of Origin</h5>



<p>The origin language of a word, and the spelling rules that come with it, need to be discretely taught to ensure students understand the &#8220;why&#8221; of spelling.&nbsp; This goes beyond simply memorizing prefixes/roots/suffixes.</p>



<h4 class="wp-block-heading">Phonemic Power-Ups:</h4>



<p>Etymology can also deepen students&#8217; understanding of phonemic awareness, the ability to recognize and manipulate individual sounds in words.</p>



<h5 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-historical-sound-shifts">Historical Sound Shifts</h5>



<p>By exploring the historical evolution of words, students can see how sounds have changed over time. For example, the word &#8220;knight&#8221; originally was pronounced with both the &#8220;k&#8221; and the &#8220;gh&#8221; sounds.&nbsp; Some knowledge of linguistic history can further explain spelling.</p>



<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>The Great Vowel Shift</strong>&nbsp;(links at bottom of post) was a gradual change in the pronunciation of English long vowels during the Middle Ages, after many spellings were relatively standardized.&nbsp; For example, &#8220;food,&#8221; &#8220;good,&#8221; and &#8220;blood&#8221; all rhymed with &#8220;goad&#8221; in Chaucer&#8217;s work, but in Shakespeare&#8217;s works, they all rhymed with the modern pronunciation of &#8220;food&#8221;.&nbsp; (You can hear remnants of original vowels when you listen to dialects like Scots English.)&nbsp; Vowels are changing, even now, as dialects and languages further meld with the ease of travel.</li>
</ul>



<h5 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-connecting-sounds-to-meaning">Connecting Sounds to Meaning</h5>



<p>Etymology helps students connect the sounds of words to their historical origins and meanings, creating a richer and more meaningful understanding of language.</p>



<h4 class="wp-block-heading">Morphological Marvels:</h4>

For example, they can break down &#8220;unbelievable&#8221; into &#8220;un-&#8221; (not), &#8220;believe,&#8221; and &#8220;-able&#8221; (capable of being).</li>



<li><strong>Building Vocabulary:</strong>&nbsp;By understanding how words are formed, students can build their vocabulary more effectively. They can use their knowledge of prefixes, suffixes, and roots to deduce the meanings of unfamiliar words.</li>

<li>Have a &#8220;Word of the Week&#8221;, or even a &#8220;Root of the Week&#8221;</li>



<li>Use etymology to explain spelling rules and exceptions. Group spelling words by origin to help students make that connection.</li>



<li>Encourage students to research the origins of words they encounter in reading.</li>



<li>Keep a word wall for the words the class has discovered.</li>
</ul>

<li><strong>Create timelines</strong>&nbsp;of word evolution</li>



<li><strong>Etymology Scavenger Hunts:&nbsp;</strong>have students research the origins of words related to a certain topic or theme</li>

<p>Hey there, fellow speechies! Today, I wanted to share the journey I&#8217;ve been on, one that has had a huge impact on my life…my experience with Post-Concussive Disorder. &nbsp;Now, I’ve always been highly aware of brain injuries and the troubles they can cause individuals who have suffered them. &nbsp;My kids and I have always worn helmets when riding bikes or skating, we wear our seatbelts.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p><span style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;"><span style="font-family: helvetica;">As a Speech Language Pathologist, I’m used to being on the clinician side of the table, helping others with communication and cognition. &nbsp;I’m the one with the answers, right? &nbsp;But when I found myself trying to cope with the symptoms of a concussion that had lasted months past the expected recovery time, my perspective flipped.</span></span></p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-is-post-concussive-disorder">What is Post-Concussive Disorder?</h2>



<p><span style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;"><span style="font-family: helvetica;">Post-Concussive Disorder (PCD) is the catch-all for these lingering symptoms. Symptoms can include headaches, nausea, mental fog, dizziness, difficulty concentrating, poor memory, noise and/or light sensitivity, vision disturbances, anxiety, depression… all symptoms associated with a concussion and then some. It’s not understood what causes it, how to treat it, or even how much of the population experiences it.  Numbers range from 11% to 82% of mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) cases.  I know, helpful, right?!</span></span></p>

<p><span style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;"><span style="font-family: helvetica;">So let me back up a little. &nbsp;It was the early summer of 2022, and we had emptied our pool to do repairs and clean, and I, being the wonderful wife and mother that I am, got up early to get a jump on the heat. &nbsp;Little did I realize that the dew was heavy enough to turn our vinyl liner into a slip-n-slide, and no sooner had I stepped off the fiberglass steps than I found myself on my back, the occipital portion, where my skull rounds to connect to my spinal column, on the edge of the fiberglass step.</span></span></p>



<p><span style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;"><span style="font-family: helvetica;">I don’t think I lost consciousness, but we went in that day, and had a scan that showed that there was no apparent bruising on my brain.  I had mild to moderate typical concussion symptoms, but my neck pain never went away.  So then I went to physical therapy, Round 1, which alleviated the neck pain to a tolerable level.</span></span>  </p>

<p><span style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;"><span style="font-family: helvetica;">Well, now the school year was starting.  I was still feeling lightheaded and dizzy if I turned too fast, still had some neck pain, had a persistent headache.  I felt like my mind was moving through sludge.  Getting through groups of elementary kids was&#8230;difficult.  And the problem was, it continued to worsen, to the point where I was having daily migraines and took medical leave that October.</span></span></p>

<p><span style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;"><span style="font-family: helvetica;">After that, I had the school district breathing down my neck to get back to work. &nbsp;We were struggling to find a solution. &nbsp;I couldn’t think clearly most of the time, even having word recall issues.&nbsp; I struggled even knowing what it was that was wrong with me, just that I wasn&#8217;t right.&nbsp; My general practitioner isn’t much help, but we do find a “concussion doctor” who, of course, is an hour away and doesn’t take our insurance. &nbsp;</span></span></p>



<p><span style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;"><span style="font-family: helvetica;">After a couple of months of testing, I find that I now have eyes that focus in slightly different directions. &nbsp;I go to physical therapy (Round 2) to work on visual integration, I go to speech therapy to work on the mental fog and memory. &nbsp;I am hiding in my room in the dark with one lamp, and telling my family to keep quiet. &nbsp;Thank goodness my kids are teens.</span></span></p>

<p><span style="font-family: helvetica;">It comes to the point I have to resign from my job in May 2023. &nbsp;At that point, even with nearly six months of treatment orchestrated by the concussion expert, I’m still having daily migraines. &nbsp;My speech therapist was wonderful, and had me walking the track around the rehab center’s gym while I performed memory and cognition tasks to aid in desensitization to light and noise.</span></p>



<p><span style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;"><span style="font-family: helvetica;">Now, nearly two years after, I have headaches almost daily, but they are headaches, not migraines. &nbsp;I’ve had two sets of lenses because my eye focus has changed. &nbsp;But the mental fog has dissipated, and I feel like myself again for the most part. &nbsp;I seem to misspell words more now, and memory is still an issue compared to pre-concussion. &nbsp;And I’ve picked up a slight stutter that comes out when my brain is overdoing it.</span></span></p>



<p><span style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;"><span style="font-family: helvetica;">Now, why do I tell you all this? &nbsp;As speech-language pathologists, we often are treating individuals who have experienced a concussion, and we may not even realize it. &nbsp;Because no one tells the speech teacher in the corner closet, right? &nbsp;And we should be aware that these symptoms can persist weeks, months, even years after the typical recovery period.</span></span></p>

<p><span style="font-family: helvetica;">&nbsp;</span><span style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;"><span style="font-family: helvetica;">We need to be prepared to go to bat for our students who might need extra help with coping strategies in the aftermath of a concussion. &nbsp;They may not be able to describe what’s wrong. &nbsp;These challenges are invisible, and in many ways, unmeasurable, and can add up to creating emotional issues as well. &nbsp;Students who have experienced a concussion may need accommodations that are not “listed” in our handy IEP software. &nbsp;They may need cognitive therapy to address attention, memory or problem-solving issues. &nbsp;Counseling may even be necessary.</span></span></p>



<p><span style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;"><span style="font-family: helvetica;">As speech-language professionals, we need to raise awareness and understanding both of concussions and post-concussive disorder. &nbsp;We need to help families navigate the symptoms, and educate teachers watch for the signs in their students.</span></span></p>



<p><span style="box-sizing: border-box; margin: 0px; padding: 0px;"><span style="font-family: helvetica;">Together, we can help them on the road to recovery, one step at a time.</span></span></p>
