Remember a few weeks back when we talked about the magic of short stories in therapy? They offer a rich environment for practicing all sorts of speech and language skills, and guess what? He was sad because he loved our story time! (Don&#8217;t worry, I sent him home with my trusty&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.teacherspayteachers.com\/Product\/Speech-Therapy-Spark-Engaging-Middle-School-Short-Stories-Categorized-by-Genre-11644006\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">story list<\/a>!) That&#8217;s the power of these engaging tales.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Ready to Dive In?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I&#8217;m excited to share some of the short stories that have been a hit with my students, along with a few new ones we&#8217;ll be exploring soon. &nbsp;Here&#8217;s what I look for when selecting stories:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Engaging Plot:<\/strong>&nbsp;A reasonable amount of action to keep things interesting.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Relatable Characters:<\/strong>&nbsp;Kids connect better with stories they can understand.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Twist Endings:<\/strong>&nbsp;Surprise endings leave a lasting impression (the kids love these!).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Manageable Length:<\/strong>&nbsp;Ideally under 5,000 words (around 40 minutes of reading time).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Student Choice:<\/strong>&nbsp;Involving them in the selection process boosts engagement.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-tried-and-true-stories\">Tried and True Stories<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>With links to Lesson Guides:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.teacherspayteachers.com\/Product\/The-Wifes-Story-Lesson-Guide-11182793\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Wife&#8217;s Story<\/a><\/strong>&nbsp;by Ursula le Guin\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A &#8220;backwards werewolf&#8221; horror story with a twist ending that the kids find fascinating.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.teacherspayteachers.com\/Product\/Three-Skeleton-Key-Lesson-Guide-11206603\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Three Skeleton Key<\/a><\/strong>&nbsp;by George Toudouze\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A horror story of three men stuck in a lighthouse surrounded by man-eating rats.&nbsp; Has a bit of a twist at the end.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.teacherspayteachers.com\/Product\/The-Night-the-Ghost-Got-In-Lesson-Guide-11106879\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Night the Ghost Got In<\/a><\/strong>&nbsp;by James Thurber\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A humorous ghost tale that had the kids asking for another.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The Tell-Tale Heart<\/strong>&nbsp;by Edgar Allen Poe\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A psychological murder story with a twist ending.&nbsp; I used an adapted version.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The Monkey&#8217;s Paw<\/strong>&nbsp;by W.W. Jacobs\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A dark story about being careful what you wish for.&nbsp; The kids loved the twist ending.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The Storyteller<\/strong>&nbsp;by Saki (H.H.
