Way back in 2000, the year the world didn’t end, phones got cameras, and I first started as an SLP. (Yes, I had a district laptop, but nothing on it.) I walked into the school, sat down at the therapy table with my group of kids. I expected that I would always have all the answers. I felt like I was a failure if I didn’t have them. After all, I had that fancy M.S. saying I did. And you know, of course I didn’t, young thing that I was.

The Myth of Having All the Answers

The moment you realize you don’t have the answers.

And if I didn’t have all the answers, well, by no means let the kids know, right?!! Because then they’d take advantage. They would run amok! Gone would be any control I’d have over therapy sessions.

It’s been 24 years, ya’ll. I don’t have all the answers. Sorry to disappoint. LOL. Seems I’ve got fewer answers each year! And you know what else? Not only am I not a failure, not only do the kids not run amok. It seems to increase our rapport when I admit I don’t know something or show them a flaw.

Lessons in Vulnerability: My Stutter and More

For example, I have more stutterers this year than I’ve ever had before. I also have recently suffered Post Concussive Disorder, which seems to have increased my “normal” stuttering. So I have gotten into the habit of pointing out my repeated sounds and words to my students.

I just shrug and say, “Look, there I stuttered again.” As if it was a hiccup. Because, really, that pretty much describes what it feels like for me. Take a moment and imagine how that would affect a middle school stutterer. Perhaps you could show them this TedxTalk video, about “The Power of a Stutter.”

Or maybe I have a question that they don’t answer correctly. Sometimes I realize I didn’t ask it well – and I tell them that. Sure, I’m an adult, and I may know more than they do, but I’m not infallible. They need to see me admit that with grace and humor. Have you ever tried to work with someone who can’t admit they were wrong? Or tried to have a relationship with one? I’m showing these kids they can admit they made an error with no judgement.

Beyond Perfection: Growth, Resilience, and Acceptance

A clear signpost on the path to becoming an effective SLP: wisdom and grace always outweigh the impossible pursuit of perfection.

This goes far beyond the new-fangled concept of ableism. Not that I’m not behind that idea 100%! I fully support the idea of not trying to change things that are simply the way people are made.

This is the idea of teaching children that it is ok not to be perfect. Some may call it Growth Mindset, some may call it resilience. There are many names for it. It’s been recycled through the years. Why? Because we have tried to reach perfection from the dawn of history.

For years, I chased the elusive notion of perfection as an SLP, only to realize it hindered my connection with my students. I was so preoccupied with trying to be flawless that I forgot to truly engage during out sessions. If I wasn’t engaged, then my students sure weren’t! And what life lessons were they learning? That they weren’t good enough the way they were? That mistakes were bad?

Teaching Embracing Imperfection By Modeling

Even AI-generated images, with their often “too perfect” details, remind us why our unique human idiosyncrasies are truly essential.

Each time I make a mistake, and show my students how to accept it with grace, I am teaching them that they don’t have to be perfect. Giving them resilience so that their inevitable mistakes don’t push them down. They can work to be better. Yet, they are wonderful the way they are. You know why AI generated people always look weird – it’s because they are too perfect! We need our little idiosyncrasies!

So, forget about achieving 100 speech goals. What truly matters is nurturing a culture of acceptance and growth—one mistake at a time. After all, isn’t that the greatest lesson of all?

Love yourselves, my e-speechies! ‘Till next time,

Ahoy there, me hearties! Gather round, ye landlubbers and seasoned sailors alike, as we embark on a grand adventure through the choppy waters of classroom communication! Today, we be talkin’ ’bout teachin’ alternatives to that age-old phrase that be sendin’ shivers down every teacher’s spine: “I don’t know.”

Now, ye might be wonderin’, “Why in the seven seas should we bother teachin’ alternatives to ‘I don’t know’?”

Empowering Authors to Write Inclusive Characters

This May, National Speech-Language-Hearing Month (formerly Better Speech-Language and Hearing Month), offers a chance to celebrate the incredible work of SLPs (Speech-Language Pathologists) and the impact we have on individuals with communication disorders and differences. This year, however, I want to focus on something different: the power of representation in literature. I strongly believe it’s important to highlight inclusive characters that reflect the realities of those with communication disorders.

The Need for Diverse Characters:

As an SLP with over 24 years of experience, I’ve witnessed firsthand the transformative power of seeing yourself reflected in the world around you. Unfortunately, for children and adults with communication disorders, this representation is often lacking. Many books portray characters with communication challenges as one-dimensional figures defined solely by their stutter or inability to speak. These negative portrayals can leave individuals with disorders or differences feeling poorly about themselves and their struggles.

This National Speech-Language-Hearing Month, I felt compelled to contribute to a more inclusive narrative. That’s why I poured my experience and passion into writing a book that empowers authors to create characters with communication disorders who are genuine, relatable, and multifaceted.

Sparking Inclusive Storytelling:

This image highlights the universal joy of reading and the critical need for diverse representation in literature, allowing all individuals to see themselves reflected in stories.

The inspiration for “Unspoken Volumes” came from countless interactions with my clients. Over the years, I’ve been inspired by the brilliance, humor, and resilience of people grappling with various communication challenges. However, they aren’t simply defined by their communication disorders – they are artists, athletes, dreamers, and everything in between. These human beings deserve to see reflections of their complexities in the stories they cherish.

A Shocking Lack of Representation:

Consider these staggering statistics:

1 in 10: Number of children who are impacted by a communication disorder at some point during childhood.1

2 million: Adults in the U.S. who currently are affected by aphasia alone.2

1%: Percentage of Americans who stutter.3

Despite these numbers, why are we not seeing a more statistically accurate representation in literature?

Tellingly, my personal reading experience reveals characters who are misrepresented or stereotypical, sometimes living in isolation due to a lack of exploration of treatment or alternative communication options. It’s a sadly common trope – the tragic silent protagonist, not limited to The Little Mermaid!

Beyond the Book: A Collaboration for Authenticity

This image represents the collaborative effort needed between SLPs and authors to create authentic and empathetic portrayals of characters with communication disorders.

Undoubtedly, my hope is that this book fosters a collaborative effort between SLPs and literary creators. By working together, we can ensure that characters with communication disorders are portrayed accurately and respectfully. The book delves into the vast spectrum of communication disorders, offering practical strategies for authors to portray those who struggle with communication difficulties or differences with empathy and hope.

This collaboration allows children and adults to not only see themselves reflected but also develop empathy and understanding for others who communicate differently.

A Shared Journey of Empowerment

While I’m excited to share this book with the world, the core message goes beyond promotion. This is about advocating for inclusive storytelling and the profound impact it has on people with communication disorders. National Speech-Language-Hearing Month is a time to celebrate our profession, but it’s also a time to reflect on how we can empower the next generation.

Without a doubt, this journey is about more than just a book – it’s about creating a world where every human feels seen, valued, and empowered by the stories they encounter. That means we have to stop hiding communication disorders, and fully explore them as much as we would any other personal challenge a character might face. We need more inclusive characters with communication disorders.

Boost Communication Skills with Mental Rehearsal!

We all know practice is key in speech therapy & skill development. But what if we could supercharge your sessions and enhance results even before students utter a sound? Enter mental rehearsal (visualization)!

What is Mental Rehearsal?

Mental rehearsal is exactly what it sounds like – practicing a skill in your head. Imagine yourself saying a tricky sound, reading fluently, or delivering a captivating presentation. It’s like daydreaming, but with a purpose!

The Science Behind the Superpower:

Mental rehearsal isn’t just wishful thinking; it’s backed by neuroscience! When you vividly imagine performing a skill, you activate similar brain pathways as when you perform it physically. This strengthens those pathways, making the actual skill execution smoother and more efficient.

Benefits of Mental Rehearsal:

Boosts Confidence: Feeling successful in your mind translates to real-world confidence. You approach challenges with a “been there, done that” attitude.1

Improves Skills: Strengthens brain pathways involved in the practiced skill, leading to faster progress and better outcomes.2

Reduces Anxiety: Calm pre-speech jitters by rehearsing success. Visualizing yourself handling challenging situations calmly reduces anxiety and promotes a more relaxed state of mind.3

Reduces Incorrect Practice: Minimize bad habits by focusing on the correct way. Mental rehearsal allows you to hone the perfect technique, reducing the risk of accidentally practicing and reinforcing mistakes.

Convenient: Practice anytime, anywhere – waiting for the bus, before bed, etc. Mental rehearsal offers ultimate flexibility, allowing you to fit in practice sessions even with busy schedules.

Mental Rehearsal in Therapy & Education: Applications for Diverse Needs

Mental rehearsal can be a powerful tool for a wide range of situations in both therapy and education settings:

Generalization: Bridge the gap between the controlled environment of therapy and the real world (e.g., rehearsing using new skills on the playground or in the classroom). Students can mentally rehearse using their newly acquired skills in different settings, promoting carry-over and generalization.

Limited Therapy Time: Make the most of short therapy sessions. While in-person practice is crucial, mental rehearsal allows students to keep practicing and improving their skills between sessions, maximizing progress within the limited timeframe.

Fear and Avoidance: Overcome fears by mentally rehearsing success. For students struggling with social anxiety or stuttering, visualizing themselves confidently engaging in challenging social situations can equip them with the tools to face their fears in real life.4

Physical Limitations: Allow everyone to participate and improve regardless of limitations. Students with physical limitations that hinder certain types of practice can still benefit from mental rehearsal.

Waiting Time: Engage students in mental rehearsal during group activities or while waiting for their turn. Minimize idle time by having students rehearse target skills in their minds, promoting active learning and maximizing every minute.

How to Use Mental Rehearsal: Techniques for Different Skills

Here are some specific ways to use mental rehearsal in therapy and education, tailored to different communication skills:

Speech Sounds: Imagine your mouth making the correct shape and feeling the airflow for a tricky sound. This is particularly helpful for sounds that are hard to see or feel, giving you a clearer mental image of the correct production.5

Fluency: Picture yourself speaking smoothly and confidently in a challenging situation, like ordering food at a restaurant. This can help reduce anxiety in situations that usually trigger stuttering or disfluencies.

Reading: Visualize the words on the page and hear yourself reading them fluently with expression. This is especially helpful for kids who get nervous reading aloud in class. Imagine yourself captivating the audience with your clear and engaging reading.

Language Skills: Rehearse using target vocabulary words or sentence structures in different contexts. Imagine yourself participating in a conversation and seamlessly using the newly learned language skills.

Social Skills: Play out a social interaction in your head, like introducing yourself to someone new or joining a group conversation. This is perfect for practicing skills that are difficult to replicate in a therapy session. Visualize yourself navigating social situations with ease and confidence.

Relax and Get Comfy: Find a quiet, comfortable space to minimize distractions and maximize focus.

Vivid Visualization: Engage all your senses for a clear mental image. Imagine not only the visual aspects of the task, but also the sounds, smells, and even the emotions you want to experience while performing the skill.

Focus on Success: Imagine yourself doing it perfectly, with confidence and ease. Fill your visualization with positive emotions and a sense of accomplishment.

Regular Practice: The more you rehearse, the better the results! Just like building a muscle, mental rehearsal strengthens neural pathways with consistent practice. Aim for short, regular sessions throughout the day.

Explaining Mental Rehearsal to Students: Making it Fun and Engaging

Here are some tips to explain mental rehearsal to students in a way that is both engaging and relevant to their age group:

Relatable Examples: Talk about athletes or actors and their mental preparation routines. Discuss how athletes visualize themselves performing their winning moves or actors rehearse their lines in their heads before a big performance.

Interactive Activities: Play games where students take turns visualizing simple tasks. For example, have them close their eyes and imagine themselves making a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, step-by-step. Discuss the different sensory details they might experience during this visualization.

Positive Reinforcement: Focus on the benefits of mental rehearsal, like feeling more confident and prepared. Help students understand how mental rehearsal can be their “secret weapon” for success.

Age-Appropriate Complexity: Tailor the explanation to the student’s age and cognitive skills. For younger children, keep it simple and focus on basic visualizations. As students mature, you can introduce more complex scenarios and strategies.

Make it Fun! Use props, silly voices, or movement to keep students engaged. You could create a “mental rehearsal superhero” character who helps students visualize success.

Start Small & Build Up: Begin with short, simple tasks and increase complexity as students gain confidence. This helps them experience success early on and motivates them to continue practicing.

Motivating Your Students

Let’s face it, aspiring communicators (a.k.a. our adorable clients) on their speech therapy journeys can sometimes feel like they’re translating Martian. Mastering those tricky sounds, like the elusive “/r/” that makes “robot” sound more like “wobot,” can be frustrating. But fear not, fellow SLPs and educators! We’re here to be their speech therapists in shining armor (or maybe speech therapists in comfy clothes with endless supplies of stickers, because let’s be real).

Building a Speech Therapy Dream Team: We’re All in This Together

Feeling alone can make anyone want to clam up (pun intended). Here’s how we can help our little language warriors see they’re surrounded by a cheer squad:

Championing Role Models

Create a “Communication Champions” wall of fame! Think actors who rock a stutter like Emily Blunt, or athletes who triumphed over the “/r/” sound like Michael Jordan. These champions prove that even superstars sometimes need a little extra practice!

Building Buddies

Pair up kiddos at similar stages for peer support. Role-playing silly scenarios and practicing communication tricks together fosters camaraderie and makes therapy feel less like work and more like, well, playing pretend (but way cooler). If not possible, think about creating “speech pen pals” or having a monthly lunch meet up.

Story Time with a Twist

Ditch the boring bedtime stories and grab books with relatable characters who face speech challenges. Discussing how they tackled their communication battles and celebrating their victories together makes learning fun (and secretly educational!). There is a wonderful list of these books on Speak. Play. Love.

The Magic (and Occasional Silliness) of YouTube:

The internet is a treasure trove of resources. Find YouTube videos that resonate with your child’s struggles. Seeing others conquer similar challenges is like watching a superhero origin story, but instead of capes, they gain the power of clear communication! See my articles: YouTube in Therapy: Engaging Older Students and Unlocking Language Learning with YouTube

Celebrating Every Milestone, Big or Small (Even the Ones That Sound Like a Cat)

Acknowledging progress, no matter how seemingly insignificant, is key.

Here are some tips for highlighting their achievements:

Visual Triumph Charts

Create engaging charts where children can track their progress with stickers or markers. Think “graduating” levels or silly monster drawings that grow with each success! Even young children understand the joy of seeing progress visualized (and the power of stickers, obviously). Here’s my free pocket graph chart, simple enough for young minds to understand.

Positive Reinforcement

Celebrate even minor improvements with specific praise and encouragement. Tailor your praise to the specific effort the child is making. For example, “I see how hard you’re working, even when it’s tough. That’s super-duper brave!” For the trickiest goals, use matrices or rubrics, to show even a small amount of progress. See my article: Mastering the Art of Measurement: A Guide to Creating Rubrics in Speech Therapy (with Bonus Example!)

Connecting Therapy to Everyday Goals

Help them connect their therapy work to real-world goals, like confidently ordering their favorite food at a restaurant without accidentally asking for a side of socks (because let’s be honest, that’s a conversation nobody wants to have). This connection boosts motivation and makes them feel like therapy is all about unlocking superpowers, not just mastering sounds.

Superpower Spotlight!

Speech therapy isn’t about making everyone the same. We celebrate how each child uses their unique strengths to conquer communication challenges. Teach them about Multiple Intelligences (check out this article explaining on Psychology Today) – some whizzes with words, others shine with numbers, and some are body or nature superstars! Help your child discover their own superpowers and celebrate their differences. Have them create a poster of their talents and start a bulletin board!✨

“I Can Do Hard Things”: Fostering a Growth Mindset

Building a positive mindset is key. Here are some strategies to empower children with a “can-do” attitude:

The Power of Positive Affirmations

Model positive self-talk like “I can do hard things” or “I’m getting better every day.” Encourage them to repeat these affirmations themselves. Hearing and believing in their own potential is empowering (and way cooler than a boring old pep talk).

Equipping Them for Challenges

Provide coping mechanisms for dealing with frustration. Techniques like deep breathing exercises or a calming mantra (maybe something funny like “Sock monster go away!”) can help them navigate difficult moments. Pointing out your own mistakes or frustrations and how you deal with them models coping mechanisms and realize that no one is perfect!

I recommend these fun YouTube videos to demonstrate:

The Backwards Brain Bicycle – Smarter Every Day – YouTube video highlights how the brain creates “ruts” and has to relearn new habits, great for children learning new speech sounds.

OK Go – This Too Shall Pass – Rube Goldberg Machine – I have students watch this video for the multiple broken TVs and pianos to highlight that our first attempts may have a lot of mistakes but if we keep working we will get it.

Visualization Techniques

Encourage children to visualize themselves successfully mastering sounds or speaking fluently. Visualization strengthens their belief in their ability to achieve their goals (think of it like training for the communication Olympics!).

For more information on this, see my previous blog post “Rethinking Practice: The Power of Mental Rehearsal.” Or check out this blog post by Maggie Dent on using mental rehearsal in the classroom.

Keep It Ongoing

Remember, reassurance is an ongoing journey. By incorporating these strategies throughout your therapy sessions, you can empower children with speech and language difficulties to embrace the journey, celebrate their progress, and ultimately achieve their communication goals.

Does your child wonder: “What is stuttering? Am I the only one who talks this way?”

Navigating the complexities of stuttering can bring confusion and anxiety for both children and their families. That’s why I wrote “It’s Just the Way I Talk: Facts About Stuttering for Ages 5-8.” It is a compassionate guide designed to transform uncertainty into understanding and empower young voices.

I’m incredibly proud to share that this book has not only become a steady seller, but it’s also reached #40 in Children’s Books on Physical Disabilities on Amazon. Furthermore, it has been read cover-to-cover numerous times on Kindle Unlimited! This continued success is a testament to the critical need it fills. It provides clear, accessible resources for young children who stutter.

From an SLP’s Heart: Why I Wrote “It’s Just the Way I Talk”

The core message of ‘It’s Just the Way I Talk’ emphasizes that ‘Stuttering is OK,’ fostering acceptance and normalization for young readers.

As a speech-language pathologist with over 24 years of experience, I’ve seen firsthand the profound impact stuttering can have on a child’s self-esteem. I vividly recall working with a young boy, Alex, who felt isolated and ashamed, his confidence faltering. During our sessions, a profound realization struck me: Alex, and indeed many other children who stutter, didn’t truly understand what stuttering was.

More importantly, they didn’t realize they weren’t alone in their experiences. This critical gap in understanding became the seed that blossomed into “It’s Just the Way I Talk.” My dream was to create a resource that not only provides factual clarity but also helps children realize they are not alone. Ultimately, the book aims to build their confidence to communicate freely.

Why “It’s Just the Way I Talk” Matters: More Than Just Facts

This page from ‘It’s Just the Way I Talk’ uses a child scientist illustration to explain that stuttering is a brain difference, demystifying the condition for young readers.

“It’s Just the Way I Talk” goes beyond simply explaining stuttering. It’s a heartfelt celebration of unique communication styles and a powerful tool for fostering confidence and acceptance. Geared toward early to mid-elementary ages, it’s also proven valuable for older children and adults seeking foundational knowledge.

Here’s what makes it an essential resource:

Child-Friendly Truths: The book demystifies stuttering (also known as stammering). It provides clear, age-appropriate facts about what it is, why it happens, and why it’s a perfectly normal brain difference – not a fault.

Fostering Acceptance & Confidence: It gently tackles common questions and anxieties. Children learn they are not alone and that stuttering doesn’t reflect intelligence or ability. This fosters self-acceptance and empowers young readers to embrace their voice.

Beyond “Fixing”: Focusing on Strengths & Self-Advocacy: The book encourages children to identify their strengths rather than solely focusing on “curing” stuttering. It helps them develop self-advocacy skills and explore the stuttering community, promoting a positive self-image.

This page from ‘It’s Just the Way I Talk’ provides actionable ways others can be supportive towards a child who stutters, promoting empathy and inclusion.

Navigating Reactions from Others: The book offers practical guidance on understanding why others might react in certain ways. It empowers children to communicate their needs, highlighting that well-meaning suggestions like “slow down” or “just relax” might not always be helpful.

Support for the Whole Family & Beyond: It provides updated information and valuable guidance for parents, teachers, and speech-language pathologists (SLPs). This fosters a supportive communication environment. Additionally, it helps cultivate empathy and inclusivity in non-stuttering children by promoting understanding of communication differences.

As a practicing SLP for many years, I’ve consistently observed the challenges faced by children who stutter and the need for resources that align with established evidence-based practices (EBPs). “It’s Just the Way I Talk” was carefully crafted to meet these standards. It is recommended by organizations like the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) and the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD):

Psychoeducation: The book empowers children with essential, factual information about stuttering, including its normalcy and lack of control. This directly aligns with EBP recommendations, which helps reduce anxiety in children who stutter. (Ref: National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders)

Parent Training: By understanding stuttering and its causes through the book, parents can provide a more informed and supportive environment at home. This is a key aspect of successful stuttering therapy. (Ref: Journal of Fluency Disorders)

Communication Strategies: The book indirectly introduces communication strategies by encouraging children to communicate what helps them stutter less. This aligns with EBPs that teach children self-advocacy skills and strategies for managing their communication. (Ref: Language, Speech, and Hearing Services in Schools)

Reviews are the heartbeat of a book’s success, especially for a mission-driven title like ‘It’s Just the Way I Talk.’ Each review, particularly those with comments, significantly boosts our visibility on platforms like Amazon and Goodreads. This helps us reach more children who need to feel confident about their voice. Whether you borrowed or bought a copy, please take a moment to share your thoughts on Amazon, Goodreads, or your library app. Your feedback truly helps us spread this vital message!

I’ve been doing this speech therapy thing for quite a while now (seriously, about to start my 25th year!). One thing that consistently strikes me is how often our students who stutter, are missing a really fundamental piece of the puzzle: understanding their own stuttering. This is a key piece to empowering kids who stutter, especially as they get into the middle and upper grades.

I’d love to hear from you: What kind of resources do you find would most benefit your students who stutter in developing a better understanding of their speech? Share your thoughts in the comments below!

The Missing Piece: Understanding their own stuttering

Think about it – we spend so much time, and rightfully so, teaching strategies to help ease those bumpy moments in their speech. But how often do we really dig into the “why” behind it all? While doing this, we focus on empowering kids by helping them understand their speech patterns.

I’ve seen so many amazing kids who’ve been in therapy since they were tiny, faithfully practicing their smooth speech techniques with each new SLP who comes along. And yet, when you talk to them, their big questions are often still: “How do I fix this?” and “When can I graduate from speech?” It’s almost like we’re giving them tools without a clear understanding of the landscape they’re navigating.

Beyond “Fixing” the Stutter

Involuntary neurological processes, such as nystagmus, offer a comparison to stuttering.

Imagine someone with essential tremors just trying to hold still, without knowing it’s a neurological thing. Or someone with nystagmus (involuntary, rhythmic eye movements), where the eyes move in ways they can’t control. It’s kind of the same with stuttering. Knowing this can enable children who stutter by giving them more awareness about their condition.

It’s also important to acknowledge that for young children, early intervention and the teaching of fluency strategies can indeed be highly effective in reducing or even eliminating stuttering. The earlier support is provided, the more neuroplasticity can be leveraged.

However, the longer stuttering persists, the more ingrained it can become, often making complete elimination less likely and the focus of therapy shifting towards management, acceptance, and effective communication. Empowerment lies in knowing how to manage one’s stutter, especially for persistent cases.

Furthermore, the longer a child stutters, the more likely they are to develop negative emotional responses to their disfluency, such as anxiety, frustration, avoidance behaviors, and even shame. These emotional layers can then further complicate their communication experiences, making empowerment a crucial step in therapy.

The Exhaustion of “Smooth Speech” Strategies

The climb to mask stuttering can be an arduous and draining journey. Recognizing this profound effort is the first step toward truly empowering kids who stutter.

For those who haven’t experienced it, try this: for the next half hour, consciously try to use all the fluency strategies we often teach. Go incredibly slowly. Start every consonant with a super soft onset. Pay meticulous attention to every single time your speech isn’t perfectly smooth, every little stumble or word you don’t quite say “right.” Imagine how empowering it can be for kids who stutter to know they’re not alone in this struggle.

It’s exhausting, isn’t it? And for many of our older students who stutter, this isn’t a temporary exercise; it’s their daily reality when they try to mask their natural way of speaking. After years of practicing these strategies, the persistent question echoes: “Why am I still stuttering? Why hasn’t therapy ‘fixed’ it?” Empowering kids who stutter means helping them shift from just managing symptoms to embracing their unique voice.

Empowering Students Who Stutter

That’s why I’m so passionate about education. Kids deserve to know what affects their stuttering – is it stress? excitement? certain words? What’s the deal with incidence rates? (Spoiler alert: it’s more common than many think!). Giving them this knowledge empowers them. It shifts the focus from “fixing” something that isn’t “broken” to understanding and accepting a part of themselves.

This is a big part of why I created “It’s Just the Way I Talk: Facts About Stuttering for Ages 5-8” (reaching #40 in Children’s Books on Physical Disabilities on Amazon!). It’s a gentle way to introduce these concepts to younger kids, empowering them from a young age.

Practical Resources to Foster Self-Advocacy in Kids Who Stutter

And for my fellow educators and therapists working with older students, keep an eye out! I’m diving into the brain research behind stuttering in an upcoming book aimed at those mid to upper grades – because they deserve those deeper answers that empower their understanding of stuttering.

In the meantime, I’ve also put together a resource on Teachers Pay Teachers called “Affirming Stuttering Activities”. It’s packed with activities designed to help students who stutter explore and discuss their experiences, thoughts, and feelings related to their speech. It’s really great for giving voice to kids who stutter.

One tool I’ve found helpful in shifting this perspective is a simple “Speech Self-Rating Scale”. Instead of just focusing on how many stutters they had, students can rate their overall ease of speaking, the tension they felt, how effectively they communicated their message, and their satisfaction with the interaction. This helps them recognize that communication is about more than just fluency.

Let’s move beyond just the “tricks” and empower our students with knowledge and self-acceptance. Because communication comes in all forms, and every voice deserves to be heard and valued, just the way it is. When we do this, we’re truly empowering kids who stutter to see their voice as valuable and unique.

What comes after the strategies? In my next post, I’ll be exploring the importance of stutter affirming, student-centered goals in stuttering therapy. Don’t miss it!

Talk soon,
